FAQ

Paintless Dent Repair Questions

PDR offers several advantages for dent repair in Boulder, CO, and beyond:

  • Cost-Effective: Repairs typically cost one-quarter to one-third of traditional dent repair methods, starting at $99 for a dime-sized shallow dent.
  • Time-Saving: Most dents are fixed in under an hour, and hail damage repairs often take just 1-3 days, compared to weeks at a body shop.
  • Eco-Friendly: By preserving your vehicle’s original paint, PDR avoids harmful chemicals and toxins used in body shops, making it 100% sustainable.
  • Preserves Vehicle Value: Keeping the factory finish intact maintains your car’s resale value.

At Dents By Hand, Paintless Dent Repair (PDR) starts at $99 for a small, shallow dent—about the size of a dime—on a flat sheet metal panel with easy access. This is a minor dent often unnoticed without PDR lighting, which is why we offer a free estimate at our Boulder shop rather than quoting over the phone or from photos.

A slightly larger dent, about the size of a quarter, typically ranges from $150 to $175 on sheet metal with good access. Costs vary based on dent size, depth, location, and panel type (e.g., aluminum panels are more challenging).

For hail damage or larger dents, prices can increase significantly, but PDR remains far more affordable than traditional body shop repairs.

With 29 years of experience, we ensure transparent pricing and eco-friendly repairs that preserve your vehicle’s value. Schedule a free evaluation to get a tailored estimate. Learn more on our Complimentary Dent Estimates page.

Not every dent can be fixed with PDR. Key factors include:

  • Depth: Deeper dents are harder to repair and may not achieve 100% removal. The metal can thin from severe impacts and very little can be done to overcome that condition.
  • Location: Limited access to the dent’s backside can make repairs challenging especially on deeper dents where glue pulling is less effective. Dents along the edge of a panel are often non-repairable with PDR alone as the metal is doubled up in those areas.
  • Torn Metal: We’ve seen a lot of dents over the years and things like torn metal in aluminum or bullet holes in sheet metal are not something that can be repaired with PDR.
  • Paint Condition: Cracked or Broken paint is often an indication of a severe impact and is best repaired with traditional auto body methods.
  • Collision impacts: This damage should be carefully inspected for other issues such as affected inner bracing or door beams that may have been affected. PDR can’t address structural damage.

At Dents By Hand, we offer a free evaluation to determine if your dent is a good fit for our process.

Not all dents are ideal for PDR. We assess several factors to determine if your dent qualifies:

  • Depth and Sharpness: Shallow dents are ideal; stretched or sharp dents may require special handling and might not be repairable with PDR.
  • Obstructions: Internal bracing, sound deadeners or laminated glass can complicate access to the dent’s backside or make it more risky to repair.
  • Paint Condition: Cracked paint indicates severe stress and may require traditional body shop methods, as PDR can’t address paint damage.
  • Location: Access to the dent’s backside is crucial for most repairs.
  • Metal Type: Aluminum or High Strength Steel can be more difficult to repair.

PDR repairs at Dents By Hand are quick and efficient. Minor dents, like door dings, are often fixed in under an hour, while hail damage repairs typically take 1-3 days after insurance approval. Traditional body shops can take weeks for similar damage, but our streamlined process gets you back on the road faster. Schedule a free evaluation at our Boulder shop to get an accurate timeline for your vehicle.

For minor dents, yes—PDR often removes them completely. Deeper or more complex dents, like creases or body line dents, are more challenging but can still achieve near-original condition. At Dents By Hand, most clients are amazed at the results and cost savings, even for complex cases. We set clear expectations during your free evaluation to ensure you’re satisfied with the outcome.

No, once a dent is properly removed with PDR, it won’t return. Our repairs at Dents By Hand are permanent, ensuring your originally repaired dent stays gone.

Some PDR companies and especially mobile operations at car dealerships will drill holes for quick PDR tool access and then plug the hole with a plastic cap. It can often leave exposed metal or shavings that can rust. These hack repairs may even void manufacturer warranties on newer vehicles.
To avoid drilling, Dents By Hand will carefully de-trim parts to access the dent’s backside or use Glue Pulling (GPDR) for areas with limited access. Drilling isn’t permitted for insurance claim repairs, and our methods ensure your vehicle’s integrity remains intact.

PDR works best when the paint is intact, as the paint’s flexibility allows the metal to be reshaped. If the paint is cracked—often near panel edges from hail impacts—repainting may be needed to restore pre-loss condition. For minor scratches, we can utilize wet sanding and polishing techniques in addition to applying touch-up paint (if provided) after PDR, though some paint flaws may remain visible. Even with minor paint damage, PDR is an eco-friendly, cost-effective alternative to repainting, preserving your vehicle’s value. We try to convey realistic expectations during our Dent Estimate Evaluation.

No, not all PDR companies are equal. The industry currently lacks licensing or performance standards, leading to wide variations in skill levels. Some technicians rely on low prices and substandard work, leaving molested dents unrepairable even by most experts.

At Dents By Hand, our 29 years of experience and reputation in Boulder set us apart. We use specialized PDR lighting and work in controlled shop conditions for the best results. Always inspect a company’s work under PDR lights to ensure quality—don’t settle for less.

A great PDR technician combines skill, passion, and a client-centered focus. At Dents By Hand, our technicians are dedicated to the art of PDR, with over 29 years of experience perfecting their craft. Mastering PDR requires years of training, precision, and a commitment to quality—qualities we prioritize over quick profits. We ensure every repair meets our high standards, and if we can’t fix your dent to our satisfaction, you don’t pay a dime. Choose a technician who puts your needs first and delivers invisible repairs you can trust.

A great PDR repair starts with the right conditions and expertise:

  • Controlled Environment: We work inside our Boulder shop, where temperatures are kept above 50°F to prevent paint cracking, unlike outdoor repairs.
  • Specialized Lighting: PDR lighting allows our technicians to see and work the dent with precision, ensuring an invisible repair.
  • Skilled Technicians: Our team’s 29 years of experience ensures flawless results, whether it’s a door ding or hail damage.
  • Teamwork: We train our techs to be great at what they specialize in, whether that be documenting hail damage, removing trim, repairing dents or working with the clients.
  • Quality Control: The end result is only as good as its weakest link. By following standard repair procedures and quality assurance, we deliver the best results for our clients.

Our goal is to make every repair invisible, restoring your vehicle to its pre-damage condition.

Inspect your vehicle under the same PDR lighting used by our technicians to see the repair details clearly. In bright sunlight, dents may be hard to spot, so check in a shaded area, looking for distortions in the paint’s reflection. At Dents By Hand, our goal is an invisible repair—your vehicle should show no evidence of our work. We’re not satisfied unless you are, and we won’t charge if the result doesn’t meet our standards.

Yes, PDR can fix dents on modern aluminum panels, though they’re more challenging than steel due to aluminum’s stiffness. At Dents By Hand, our technicians have many years of experience working with aluminum, using advanced PDR techniques to achieve high quality results on high-end vehicles.

Yes, PDR can be used on most vehicle types, including electric vehicles (EVs). At Dents By Hand, our technicians are certified to handle EVs, using specialized methods like EV power downs to ensure vehicle electronics are not affected and the technicians remain safe. Whether it’s a Tesla, Rvian or a traditional car, we deliver high-quality PDR repairs for hail damage, door dings, and minor dents, all while preserving your factory finish.

No, PDR does not affect your car’s warranty. Since we don’t repaint or alter your vehicle’s factory finish, your manufacturer’s paint and corrosion warranties remain intact.

Our goal is an invisible repair and oftentimes it is a paint condition (such as a deep scratch) or related issue that is the most difficult to remedy. Touch-up paint can only offer so much especially when it comes to pearl coats or high metallic paints. We generally do not charge to apply touch-up paint as it’s not possible to duplicate the same kind of flawless repairs that we can create with PDR alone.

We specialize in the PDR process and we try to be up-front about possible outcomes when it comes to difficult repairs. Your satisfaction is our goal and if a repair does not look right, we don’t charge.

Yes, PDR can boost your car’s appeal when selling. A well-maintained appearance signals to buyers that the vehicle has been cared for, increasing its value and attracting more interest. Used car dealers often use PDR to enhance resale value, knowing it delivers quick, cost-effective results. At Dents By Hand, our invisible repairs can help you get top dollar and a faster sale—whether you’re selling privately or to a dealership in Boulder or the Denver metro area.

Hail Repair Questions

Hail damage can be deceptive, often going unnoticed under normal lighting or outside under bright sunlight. At Dents By Hand, our free Hail Evaluation uses Light Tunnel technology to reveal hidden dents, helping you understand the true extent of the damage. This assessment allows you to make an informed decision about filing an insurance claim, which often makes sense due to the cumulative impact of hail. Visit our Boulder shop or book online for a no-obligation evaluation.

At Dents By Hand, written hail estimates are included with our Hail Repairs, ensuring accuracy with over 100 photos to support your claim. Because this process takes significant time, we don’t offer standalone free hail estimates. Instead, our free Hail Evaluation provides a ballpark repair cost range, helping you decide if filing a claim makes sense. For a detailed estimate without scheduling repairs, we offer a Non-Repair Hail Estimate for $250 (credited as a deposit if you repair with us later).

With 29 years of experience, we prioritize transparency to get you the best outcome in Boulder. Learn more on our Hail Damage Repair page or Insurance Support page.

No, no PDR company will actually pay your deductible to the insurance company—that’s a misleading marketing tactic used by some unethical repair shops. Your deductible is the portion of the repair cost you’re responsible for paying to the repair facility. At Dents By Hand, we craft client-focused solutions to minimize your out-of-pocket expenses, such as appearance allowances or zero out-of-pocket outcomes through strategic claim management.

Storm chasers are PDR technicians and salesmen who travel to hail-damaged areas, often setting up temporary shops. While some are skilled, many prioritize profits over quality, using aggressive sales tactics like offering cashback or free iPads to capture insurance claims. These companies may pressure clients, add dents to a vehicle, cut corners, or disappear after repairs, leaving you without recourse.

Choose a local, trusted shop like Dents By Hand—embedded in Boulder since 1996—for reliable, long-term support. Learn more in our Insights article on storm chasers.

Hail sales at dealerships can seem appealing, but proceed with caution:

  • Potential Savings: You might save money if dents don’t bother you and you don’t plan to repair them.
  • Risks: Dealerships often hire storm chasers to quickly fix hail-damaged inventory, cutting corners to maximize profit. This can lead to incomplete repairs, damaged trim, or hidden issues, especially on severely damaged vehicles like those needing new roofs.
  • Our Advice: Bring the vehicle to our Boulder shop for a free evaluation before buying. We’ll provide honest feedback on the damage and repair costs, helping you make an informed decision.
